Rocky Mountain Dusk
Location: Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Equipment: Pentax 6x7, 105mm lens, shift-left/shift right methods. Technical: Ilford FP4(120). Center section of 6x7cm negative enlarged to 4x10 print. Printed on Ilford MG IV. Exposure unrecorded, but 1 stop less than light meter reading to enhance silhouettes. Printed at grade 2.5 to print down part of one mountain peak to full black. About the image: This was taken just after the sun had set in the left part of the photo. The area is the alluvial fan of the Lawn Lake flood, a favorite area of mine, as some of you already know. A natural earthen dam broke at Lawn Lake in 1982, several miles to the right of this photo, during a heavy rain. The resulting 3000,000,000 gallons of water tore through the Roaring River ravine, tossing huge boulders around and snapping trees like matchsticks. The dead trees here are as a result of that incredible force.
