Loreo MKII Stereo Camera and Viewer Photokit

Loreo MKII 3-D CameraThe Photokit Loreo MKII stereo camera is an extremely well designed 3-D camera at a very affordable price.

Loreo (Asia) Ltd. launched a major upgrade of the popular LOREO 3-D Photokit. The new LOREO Photokit MK II camera now has glass mirror reflectors and aspheric lenses, which produces sharp 3-D pictures. Image Pitch has been adjusted for even easier 3-D fusion, particularly with 4R prints. New Mini viewers work well with images from the MKII Aspheric Lens. F-stop has been opened up to 2.5 mm diameter and the shutter adjusted from 1/90 to 1/60 sec for brighter photos under dull conditions. A new beam splitter housing eliminates internal reflection.

The appeal of this 3-D camera is a modern built-in flash unit and the ability to get side-by-side 3-D prints from standard 35mm film. You can get your 3-D photos put on a CD when you get your prints, just like regular flat film processing.

The camera is preset so that near and distant objects are shown with equal sharpness. Pictures can be taken from as close as 2.5 feet to infinity. There is no manual focusing device.

The camera is equipped with a low light sensor to let you know there is not enough light to take a perfect picture outdoors. Indoors, simply switch on the flash system to illuminate subjects for photos. Best flash picture results are obtained when the subject is from five to eight feet from the camera. The range increases to nine feet when using 400 speed film. The flash unit is powered by two "AA" batteries.

To improve the contrast of stereo prints, a specially designed lens shade is included with the camera. The lens shade helps shield against bright light shining from either side of the camera. A test shoot of the camera without using the lens shade resulted in two prints on a roll having some stray light ghost images on the prints. The camera case included with the camera has a special zipper pouch to hold the lens shade attachment when the camera is stored away.

Loreo recommends using 400 speed film for increased flash range and better performance in low light outdoor situations. A test shoot of 200 speed film indoors using flash resulted in some dark backgrounds that would be remedied using a higher speed film.

In 1990, Loreo Asia Ltd. released its original award winning 3-D Photokit. This simple but ingenious camera has a unique place in the history of stereo photography. Reliable and easy to use, the Photokit bcame very popular with 3-D enthusiasts, and is still used by many fans all over the world.

Fans liked the first Photokit because it was a compact stereo camera where most of the optics were housed in the camera body. It was lightweight and easy to carry around. Having a 28mm lens helped compensate for having a single frame split into two images. The hugely improved MK II still has all these features and is turning out to be even more popular.

Photokit MK II pictures can be digitized. Scans can be made from prints or directly from negatives. They can be viewed on computer screens with a Loreo Lite 3-D Viewer. A high resolution LCD or CRT monitor is recommended. For best 3-D effect, images should be resized so that they are not more than eight inches across on the screen.

Ask for glossy prints when getting your prints processed
3-D Review Online Magazine recommends that you always ask for glossy prints when processing film for 3-D viewing. During testing of the camera, 3-D Review Online Magazine had the first roll developed at a local one-hour processor. The 4"x 6" prints were made on matte paper, which was the default paper used by the one-hour processor. Viewing matte prints using the Deluxe or Lite viewers resulted in magnification of the paper texture, which detracted from the viewing pleasure. Glossy prints usually have higher contrast and you avoid magnifying paper texture.

Editor's Note: The initial production of the Photokit Loreo MKII stereo camera is sold out. Orders from Loreo's Web site will be filled from the next production run, which can only begin after the end of Chinese New Year. For manufacturers in China this means early February, when workers start returning to their workplaces. Projected delivery time is in late February. Loreo Asia is taking pre-orders for the next production run. Check with USA dealers who might still have the Loreo MKII camera in stock from the initial production.

Loreo 3-D Lens in a CapThe Loreo 3-D Lens in a Cap is an attachment that turns a standard single lens reflex (SLR) or digital SLR camera with interchangeable lenses into a 3-D camera. It is the latest in Loreo's digital ready Lens in a Cap series. SLR cameras have accurate viewing, exposure control and a wide range of shutter speeds. Some SLRs have auto TTL flash. With the Loreo 3-D Lens in a Cap, all these features are harnessed to produce excellent 3-D prints or digital images. The processed 3-D prints are ready for viewing with Loreo deluxe or mini-viewers. They can also be viewed on computer screens with a Loreo Lite 3-D Viewer. Loreo advises users to resize images to not more than eight inches across the computer screen for optimum 3-D effect.

For the technically minded, the 3-D Cap has a matched pair of focusing lenses, focusing range from one meter to infinity. F/11 lenses, focal length 38mm. The 3-D Lens in Cap is a brand new design. It forms a 3-D effect by transposing two images. Beam splitters designed in the 1960s for SLR cameras have a pronounced keystone effect. The 3-D Lens in a Cap retains a slight keystone effect, almost imperceptible without the use of a grid. This was introduced under controlled conditions as a compromise to give the viewfinder a brighter image and to allow the TTL exposure system to function.

It is a self-contained, integrated beamsplitter and lens system that mounts directly onto the camera body and does not need any supporting lens. This means that it does not work with SLRs that do not have interchangeable lenses, such as the Olympus E series digital cameras. It ships with seven common mount types – Canon EOS, FD, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax K, Minolta MD and AF. It is not available with M42 because there is no way of ensuring alignment with a screw mount, which is essential for taking good 3-D pictures.

The Loreo 3-D Lens in a Cap for use with APS and digital SLR cameras is slightly different from the one for standard SLRs because current digital SLRs (2002) do not have full frame (35mm) sensors. Non-full frame digital cameras typically have a focal length multiplier of 1.6. The "T" version 3-D Lens in a Cap is specially converted from a regular 3-D Lens in a Cap to compensate for the non-full frame cropping. Examples of non-full frame digital cameras include the Canon D30, D60, 1D, 10D, Rebel 300D, Nikon D1, D1X, D1H, D100, D2H, Pentax *ist, Fuji Finepix S1 Pro, S2 Pro. The 3-D Lens in a Cap is known to work with these cameras.

You need to indicate the camera mount you need so that the 3-D Lens in a Cap will fit your camera model. For example, for a Canon camera you should order the FD lens mount.

This 3-D image captured by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity's rear hazard-identification camera shows the now-empty lander that carried the rover 283 million miles to Meridiani Planum, Mars. Engineers received confirmation that Opportunity's six wheels successfully rolled off the lander and onto martian soil at 3:01 a.m. PST, Jan. 31, 2004, on the seventh martian day, or sol, of the mission. The rover is approximately 1 meter (3 feet) in front of the lander, facing north.

World 3-D Film Expo Nominated for a Rondo Award as Best Fan Event

Fans can submit votes to select the winners in several categories

Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards Statuette.3-D fans are invited to place a vote for the World 3-D Film Expo as the Best Fan Event of 2003 in the Second Annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards. The World 3-D Film Expo, held in September 2003 in Hollywood, is a nominee in the Best Fan Event Category.

The 3-D community is also able to make a "write-in" votes. Cast a write-in vote in the Best DVD Extra Category for Festival of 3-D Movie Trailers. The DVD, that was sold as a souvenir at the World 3-D Film Expo and online, features 12-minutes of actual 3-dimension footage. The Festival of 3-D Movie Trailers DVD was featured in the September 2003 issue of 3-D Review Online Magazine.

The old Mattel/View-Master® plant on Southwest Hall Boulevard could be torn down to make room for a large expansion of the Cascade Plaza shopping center.

Harsch Investment Properties Inc. of Portland has approached the city with a proposal to redevelop the controversial site into new shops and storage units. The proposal includes demolition of the vacant manufacturing plant and construction on about 6.71 acres that are the focus of a $3.45 million, 30-year state environmental cleanup.

Representatives of Harsch Investments were scheduled to meet this week with city planners to discuss the proposal that includes adding 87,000 square feet of new retail space to Cascade Plaza and building a two-story 48,000-square-foot storage building at the north end of the property.

CSCB Architects of Portland, which is designing the project, submitted the proposal in mid-December. In addition to the new retail buildings, the company expects to add 337 new parking spaces to the shopping center’s 560-space lot.

There is no estimate of the project’s cost.

Harsch Investment Properties representatives will discuss the proposal Jan. 15 with the Greenway Neighborhood Association Committee. The company has not yet applied for a permit to build the project. All discussions are in the preliminary stages prior to development.

Company representative Mary Ann Kolen said Harsch Investments was “exploring options” to expand Cascade Plaza, but had not yet acquired all the property necessary for the project. The company also was “looking at the possibility” of buying the Mattel/View-Master® site, but also had not purchased the land, she said.

Other company representatives declined to discuss the proposed project.

Cascade Plaza is a 148,954-square-foot shopping center on Southwest Cascade Avenue across Highway 217 from Washington Square. Its large stores are Burlington Coat Factory, David’s Bridal, Linens ’n Things and a Powell’s Books.

Harsch Investment Properties has owned the shopping center for about five years. The Portland company also owns more than 100 properties in six western states. Its portfolio includes 15 million square feet of office, industrial and retail development and 2,500 units of multifamily housing.

According to a preliminary site plan, construction of the new Cascade Plaza retail space would be stretched north from the existing buildings and curve around an enlarged parking lot where the View-Master® plant now sits.

Demolition of the View-Master® plant probably would not pose an environmental problem, even though the site’s groundwater has been contaminated for decades with the solvent trichloroethylene (TCE), said Bruce A. Gilles, project manager for the state Department of Environmental Quality. “We always envisioned the site being redeveloped at some point,” Gilles said.

DEQ and Mattel have worked for several years to clean up the TCE contaminated water under the site. The state and nine property owners, including Harsch Investment Properties, reached an agreement in October 2002 that created the $3.45 million, 30-year cleanup plan.

Under the plan, anyone who owns the plant site assumes the responsibility for the cleanup. It also forbids the new owners from drilling a new well or using the groundwater, something that isn’t likely in the new development, Gilles said.

TCE, a colorless liquid used for decades to degrease industrial equipment, seeped for years into the groundwater around the plant. Thousands of employees who worked at the plant making View-Master® viewers, first for GAF then for Tyco and Mattel, drank water contaminated with the solvent from 1952 until 1980.

Tests of the water supply near the site in March 1998 found TCE levels hundreds of times higher than thought safe for humans. Exposure to high concentrations of TCE can cause cancers and other illnesses.

State health officials are working with former View-Master® employees to study the effects of the exposure. Mattel, which has owned the site since 1997, maintains a one-person office in Tigard to provide information and limited medical testing for former plant employees.

Former View-Master® employees also have formed the group Victims of TCE Exposure, or VOTE, to press for more and better medical treatment and testing. The group also has hinted at a possible lawsuit against the plant’s owners because of the exposure.

Dan Nottage, general manager of Mattel Portland, the last official employee of the plant, said he felt a sentimental attachment to the buildings, but would rather see the area be redeveloped. “This is probably the best thing for the landlord to do with the site,” said Nottage, who worked at the View-Master® plant from 1978 to 2001. “It’s not much good as it is for most uses. “Personally, I’d be happy to see it developed into something that could be useful. I would miss it from a work history relationship. But actually, I would be very happy to see it put to a more beneficial use.”

Harsch Investment Properties also would not need DEQ permission to redevelop the property, he said. The company would have to manage some petroleum contamination under one of the buildings, but that could be accomplished without disrupting much of the project, Gilles said. “In circumstances like this, it’s not uncommon for the parties redeveloping contaminated properties to talk with us about what to do,” he said.

Shot on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and in the Bahamas, Ocean Wonderland 3-D brings to you the amazing beauty of the many varieties of coral and the immense diversity of the marine life thriving there.

The mission of the film is to underline the crucial ecological role of coral reefs play in maintaining the well being of our planet, and to point out and warn against the dangers that are destroying the world's coral reefs.

The Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Klaus Toepfer, articipated in the global launch of the film in Boston.

Mr. Toepfer, a United Nations Under-Secretary-General attended the world premiere of the visually stunning new movie, Ocean Wonderland 3-D, in order to drive home the message that the world's valuable and beautiful coral reefs are under increasing threat from activities such as dynamite fishing, pollution and climate change.

"All over the world, coral reefs are under assault," said Mr. Toepfer. "They are rapidly being degraded by human activities. They are over-fished, bombed and poisoned. They are smothered by sediment, and choked by algae growing on nutrient rich sewage and fertilizer run-off. They are damaged by irresponsible tourism and are being severely stressed by the warming of the world's oceans. Each of these pressures is bad enough in itself, but together, the cocktail is proving lethal."

"Today there is a new urgency to protect and conserve these important, valuable and seductively beautiful habitats," Mr. Toepfer continued. "I am therefore delighted that Ocean Wonderland 3-D has been made. Such an outstanding film can only serve to raise awareness further about the moral, economic and environmental imperatives for saving the world's coral reefs. We must ensure that this unique ecosystem continues to feed, protect and dazzle us and our descendants, for generations to come."

Ocean Wonderland 3-D was produced in collaboration with UNEP. The film shows the immense diversity of the marine life on the reefs and the amazing beauty of the many varieties of coral living there. It also illustrates the dangers threatening and destroying the world's coral reefs. The message is clear: if these threats are not eliminated today then our children may never see the amazing beauty of coral reefs, except perhaps in books or museums.

Even though they occupy less than one tenth of one percent of the world's oceans, coral reefs are vital for fisheries, coastal protection, tourism and wildlife.

Often referred to as the "rainforests of the oceans", coral reefs host an extraordinary variety of marine plants and animals (perhaps up to 2 million) including one quarter of all marine fish species. It has been estimated that only about 10 per cent of these species have been described by scientists.

Coral reefs offer countless benefits to humans, including supplying compounds for medicines. AZT, a treatment for people with HIV infections is based on chemicals extracted from a Caribbean reef sponge and more than half of all new cancer drug research focuses on marine organisms.

Coral reefs are also an important source of food for hundreds of millions of people. They also provide income and employment through tourism, and marine recreation, and export fisheries, and for many coastal villages, and some entire nations are the only source of this income and employment.

UNEP believes Ocean Wonderland 3-D will make a major contribution to marine conservation efforts worldwide and will use the film as part of its wider public awareness efforts for coral preservation.

In response to a call for action from coral experts, UNEP helped set up the International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN). ICRAN, another supporter of Ocean Wonderland 3-D, aims to transform reefs that are in a marginal condition into ones that are beacons of best practice in terms of environmentally and people-friendly management - habitats that balance the need for conservation with the genuine needs of local people for incomes and food.

Ocean Wonderland 3-D, the first Large Format movie entirely shot using new digital technology, was produced by 3-D Entertainment. The film premiered at the Simons IMAX Theatre of the New England Aquarium in Boston.

The Lafayette Theatre is a vintage, fully-renovated 1,000-seat 1924 movie palace and was one of the first theatres in Rockland County equipped to show 3-D films in mid-1953, but hasn't shown a 3-D film since October of that year. All of these films will be presented in genuine, double-system 3-D, the best method of all, using special Polarized viewing glasses and two projectors running with interlock synchronization.

The polarized method of 3-D presentation assures you of bright and clear images with no color distortion! The Lafayette Theatre is proud to be the only movie palace on the East Coast to bring a full weekend of dimensional entertainment to its patrons.

Rarely shown, even in 1953, this 13-minute black and white short covers all aspects of the test blast on May 17, 1953.
