Sammy Hagar, The Red Rocker, in 3-D

For a guy who once vowed, "I Can't Drive 55," Hall of Fame rock musician Sammy Hagar has done the best job possible to keep jammin' the pedal to the medal for over 30 years. From his dues days with early '70s radio staple Montrose to a successful, hit-filled solo career to a star turn fronting the legendary Van Halen and then back to a hit-filled solo career again -- Hagar has stuck to it longer than most and kept the needle firmly in the red all the way. Now digital imaging technology leaders Lucid Dreams/PassmoreLab are nitro-fuelling the Red Rocker into the 3-D fast lane with a new live video capturing a blazing performance in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Sammy Hagar photo courtesy of Passmorelab

Each year in October, Hagar's Cabo Wabo Cantina in southernmost Baja California is host to a multi-day birthday celebration for its founder and chief Wabo. Hagar holds court on the cantina's raucously festive stage, festooned with bottles of his signature brand tequila, and graced by special guest performers along with Sammy's regular band, the Wabos. But you can't talk about Sammy Hagar without talking about his legion of loudly loyal fans, who proudly call themselves Redheads and ensure that every show is standing room only and high-energy throughout. Plus, the freely flowing cactus juice doesn't hurt!

The video team was able to capture the full party spectacle, as each night Sammy and his band ripped through big red classics and some soon-to-be from his upcoming release, entitled Cosmic Universal Fashion (Loud and Proud/Roadrunner).

"Our digital 3-D projects significantly enhance a viewer's sense of reality," says Lucid Dreams president James Humann. "When we approached Sammy Hagar about shooting live-action 3-D at 'Rockin' Cabo 2008,' we envisioned creating a film that would be immersive for the audience and provide a sense of participation and actual physical presence at one of Sammy's sold-out shows. That was the experience I got from the recent U2 3-D movie, and that's what we felt we could bring to Sammy's performance.

"During production, we were amazed by the number of fervently loyal fans that travel to remote Cabo San Lucas year after year to live the 'Cabo Wabo experience.' We filmed four shows, and every performance was like walking into the middle of a giant New Year's Eve bash. The Cabo Wabo Cantina isn't a large space, so that presented some issues from a production standpoint. We had to take a very commando approach for shooting in the midst of a very enthusiastic crowd."

Away from the applauding crowds, Hagar has expanded his rocker persona into that of a successful entrepreneur, which began with the opening of the original Baja Cabo Wabo Cantina followed by locations in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and recently in Fresno, California. His premium tequila, introduced in 1996, has also been a smash hit. Recently he launched a health charity venture under the new Hagar Family Foundation, which donates 100-percent of proceeds from licensing through a growing chain of Sammy's Beach Bar & Grill restaurants in major US airport terminals, beginning in Hawaii. Hagar is an outspoken voice for community action and giving something back to the less fortunate, particularly children, and his foundation aims to assist individual families with health care needs.

"We're excited to work with Lucid Dreams/PassmoreLab in producing a 3-D video," says Hagar. "Our concerts and fans are energetic and loyal. Every year at our birthday bash we have a large number of fans show up with lots of energy. We feel 3-D will give our music even more punch and provide our fans with an immersive experience of the annual Cabo Wabo birthday bash. If you can't be there, 3-D is the next best thing."

Lucid Dreams/PassmoreLab have built a strong presence in the area of stereoscopic live-action performance, producing recent 3-D projects with Hagar, New York garage-glam phenoms Semi Precious Weapons, and L.A. art noir group Miss Derringer. Taking a very collaborative, art-foremost approach to working with artists to translate their music and creative energy into a striking new visual medium, the company utilizes specially designed equipment and innovative techniques to capture the complete experience of being in the live setting. "Working with the 3-D filmmakers was a painless process and they were fun to work with," adds Hagar.

Camp Blood, Blood Sisters and Apartment 51: Devil Bat 3-D DVDs Released by Razor Digital Entertainment

Camp Blood and Blood Sisters DVD cover art.Razor Digital Entertainment has released three classic horror DVDs viewable in 3-D. Camp Blood, Blood Sisters and Apartment 51: Devil Bat 3-D were shot in 3-D for maximum scare effect. These movies can be viewed in 3-D on any conventional TV or CRT monitor with the use of electronic shutter glasses.

Blood Sisters ($14.99) follows a college coed as she tries to solve a strange string of disappearances and suspects one of the school's sororities is to blame. She and her roommate go undercover to rush the sorority, where soon they discover that they've bitten off more than they can chew, as their new sorority sisters are blood-thirsty vampires. Seven of the beautiful sorority sisters spend the night in a spooky former brothel as part of an initiation that turns into a night of terror.

Camp Blood ($14.99) picks up 10 years after a series of brutal murders rocked the peaceful serenity that was Camp Blackwood. The killer, wearing a clown-mask, was never caught and the locals dubbed the area "Camp Blood" after it was closed. Unaware of the camp's bloody past, a group of friends on a camping trip wander in, only to find history repeating itself. It isn't long before a psychotic maniac wearing a clown mask shows up ready for a killing spree. With friends slowly disappearing, so does the chance of getting out alive.

Apartment 51: Devil Bat 3-D ($15.99) features two stranded alien observers passing time on Earth, enjoying a truly spacial home theatre system. The two demented hosts share unique and cutting alien insight as they critique the "best of the worst" of Hollywood film history. The Apartment 51 series is interesting in that the reptile characters are in 3-D and they are watching a 2-D movie. So this is a 3-D movie with significant portions in 2-D.

James Cameron's Avatar to Be Released in IMAX 3-D on Dec. 18, 2009

Avatar poster art.IMAX Corporation and Twentieth Century Fox announced that they have reached agreement on material terms to release the highly anticipated 3-D motion picture Avatar in IMAX 3-D simultaneously with the motion picture's premiere in conventional 3-D theatres on Dec. 18, 2009.

Avatar is directed and written by Academy Award Winner James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver. Cameron will also produce with his Lightstorm Entertainment partner, Jon Landau. Avatar will be digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience.

"Our goal with Avatar is to revolutionize live-action 3-D moviemaking, and
I have no doubt that it will look and sound incredible in IMAX 3-D," said
director James Cameron. "The larger field of view and powerful surround sound
of an IMAX theatre will completely immerse the audience in a way that
cannot be experienced anywhere else."

"We are delighted to be releasing Avatar in all available theatrical formats, and by including the premium IMAX 3-D format, we can give consumers the entire spectrum of choice at the box office," said Bruce Snyder, President, Domestic Distribution, Twentieth Century Fox. "The IMAX theatre network is increasingly becoming an important part of our distribution strategy, as it continues to expand with its new digital projection system."

"Avatar is one of the most anticipated movies of 2009 and it is a powerful addition to our film slate," said IMAX Co-CEO's Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. "We are particularly pleased with Twentieth Century Fox's increasing interest in the IMAX theatre network, which is largely fueled by the rollout of our digital projection systems and IMAX's track record of strong box office performance."

"James Cameron is a genius filmmaker. His vision and 3-D expertise make
Avatar a natural fit for IMAX and we believe it will resonate with our
audiences as well as the millions of James Cameron fans across the globe,"
added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Every
aspect of this film was meticulously designed for 3-D, so when audiences
experience this revolutionary film in an IMAX 3-D theatre, they will feel as if
they are actually in the movie.

Avatar is the story of an ex-marine who finds himself thrust into
hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a
human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a
desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people. More
than 10 years in the making, Avatar marks Cameron's return to feature
directing since helming 1997's Titanic, the highest grossing film of all time
and winner of eleven Oscars including Best Picture. WETA Digital, renowned
for its work in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and King Kong, will incorporate
new intuitive CGI technologies to transform the environments and characters
into photorealistic 3-D imagery that will transport the audience into the alien
world rich with imaginative vistas, creatures and characters.

Modification Adds 3-D Animation Imaging to View-Master® Viewer

The Cyborg View-Master Viewer.

Here is a View-Master® viewer with changed out ChromaDepth lenses, an added an Arduino-driven display unit, accelerometers and a Bluetooth connection to a PC so that it generates animated color-based chromadepth 3-D imagery. There's even push-button control of the imagery, which reacts when you shake it.

The Arduino sends the sensor data and the button states wirelessly via bluetooth to my computer. The information is parsed in Max/MSP, which in turn sends the data as OSC packets to Animata. Animata then animates everything in real-time and handles the hiding/revealing of different layers.

The Cyborg View-Master Viewer.

You look through the viewer to the screen where you will see some 3-layer Månsteri-action in all of it’s stereoscopic glory. The great thing about ChromaDepth stereoscopy is that it works with basic colors. You don’t need two channels for the video to achieve a 3-D effect. On a dark background, everything that is blue will appear to be in the background and everything that is red will appear to be in the foreground. Colors in the spectrum between blue and red will appear to be somewhere in the middle.

Matti Niinimäki, who built the accessories on the viewer, said, "I thought about hiding the electronics with bigger ears, but decided not to, because I like the ghetto-cyborg look he’s got going on there."

"The accelerometer detects your motion and will move the character on the middle layer, giving the illusion that the character is trying to mimic your movement," said Niinimäki. "You can control the content of the layers with the three buttons on the side of the viewer. Button three controls the background, button two the middle layer and button one controls the foreground. Check out the video and you’ll understand what I mean. If you have ChromaDepth glasses, put them on to see the 3-D effect."

This video is an example of what you see when you look into the viewer.

Prototype RED 3-D DSLR and Video Camera

RED prototype 3-D camera.

Jim Jannard formally announced his customizable digital video and still camera RED system that aims to take on DSLRs and further push the boundaries of video quality.

Jannard also presented a prototype RED 3-D camera, giving the 3-D movement the hope that 3-D technology will be legitimate and mainstream within a few years.

The RED Web site does not have pricing for the 3-D camera. The build-it-yourself aspect of the still camera is only limited by the resolution of the sensor you buy. Will the camera divide the sensor resolution in half in order to take twin images, though. Its all speculation at this point since a description on the Web page reads, "Prices, specifications and delivery dates subject to drastic changes." So, for now we don't know if the camera will use shutter-glasses technology (or what) for the 3-D video format. Still, the possibility of such a high-resolution 3-D video camera coming to market is quite tantalizing.

If you look at the specs of RED's DSMC, you can see the system is ambitious. You have to build up the camera from the 'brain' of the system (named Scarlet and the super high-end EPIC), built with camera sensors that range from 2/3 of an inch to a huge 6x17-cm.

The most interesting idea about this system is its easily customizable design. If a bigger sensor is released in the future, you don’t need to trash your video camera -- you just upgrade it with a new sensor. Not a bad way to sell a system that could set as many records for its price as for its number of pixels in a sensor.

The Scarlet will come with several lens mount options and will be able to shoot 3K @120fps with still pictures at 4.9 megapixels all the way up to 6K @30fps at 9.4 megapixels. They'll be priced as low as $2,500 but most likely will go over $10,000 for the better rigs.

The EPIC sensors will shoot from 5K @100fps with still pictures at 13.8 megapixels to 9K @50fps at 65 megapixels, and the price range will range from $28,000 to over $45,000 when they are released in next spring.

Jannard is promising an unfathomable 261-megapixel sensor for the rig within two years.

RED isn't the only company to integrate High Definition video and digital pictures into one rig. One of the true innovations of the past year was the Canon 5D Mark II with a built-in the ability to shoot 1080p HD video. Attention: Canon, Nikon and Pentax -- get on the 3-D bandwagon and bring out a high resolution twin-lens stereo digital camera for making stereo pairs.

RED customizable camera rig.

RED Epic, Scarlet, DSMC, Mysterium, REDCODE and Monstro are registered RED Digital Cinema 2005-2009.

Thursday Night NFL Football to be Broadcast Live in 3-D

3ality Digital will produce a live 3-D broadcast of NFL Network's Thursday Night Football game between the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders on Dec. 4.

It will be presented as a test to invited guests at three theaters: the Mann Chinese 6 in Hollywood, a theater in Boston and one in New York.

3ality Digital, the company behind the U2 3-D concert film, is overseeing production and transmission. Technicolor Digital Cinema is providing the satellite transponder time and digital-downlink services.

The test will serve as a proof of concept for the possiblities of 3-D televised sports in the home because several consumer 3-D ready displays will be used.

"This broadcast will be an exciting test of how 3-D could affect fans' experience in the future," said Howard Katz, the NFL's senior vp broadcasting and media operations.

The production underscores interest in live 3-D broadcasting, both in theaters and the home. There has been particular interest in sports: The NBA has experimented with the format with 3-D basketball broadcasts for test audiences, and the BBC tested the waters with a broadcast of rugby's Six Nations Championship.
