Tiger Beat 3-D Issue

Tiger Beat 3-D cover art.More than half of the pages in the March 3 issue of teen pop culture magazine Tiger Beat features 3-D content.

The main feature is a photo shoot with music group the Jonas Brothers. The magazine hit newsstands a few days after the group’s movie, Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience, was released in theaters.

The Jonas Brothers photos were taken with a pair of cameras. For other photos or images in the magazine that weren’t shot this way, Tiger Beat, with help from American Paper Optics, shifted the channels manually to create the anaglyph, or 3-D image.

The magazine includes six giant fold-out 3-D posters, plus 3-D glasses.

In addition to print, Tiger Beat has posted certain 3-D photos online and is developing a 3-D application for the iPhone.

More Movie Remakes Could be Headed to the Silver Screen in 3-D

Here are some of the latest movie titles that could be released in 3-D. Several of them are remakes or re-envisioned films based on classic movies from the past.

Producer Ray Haboush is looking to work with longtime horror guy Brian Yuzna, who's got a whole lot of experience with the Re-Animator franchise.

Given Yuzna's involvement, it seems likely that this remake will stick closer to the original film ... or maybe the producers will go back to the H.P. Lovecraft source material and dig up something fresh. Early word is that the Re-Animator redo will arrive in 3-D fashion.

The Birds
According to Brenna Lee Roth, an actress who's in talks for a role in the film The Birds, "I am in talks with the producer of The Birds (remake) and he said he wanted to do it 3-D, but I don't really know any more about it."

Hitchcock himself experimented with new movie technologies and gimmicks. The famed director's film Dial M for Murder was filmed in 3-D.

Aphrodite IX
Threshold Entertainment, Platinum Studios and Top Cow Productions have joined forces to adapt the Top Cow comic Aphrodite IX into a 3-D feature film.The comic centers on a cyborg assassin who achieves self-awareness and begins searching for her origins.

Chatanooga Tennessee Riverbend Festival 3-D Reel

Riverbend View-Master reel.Friends of the Festival officials hope a new promotion puts Riverbend in focus for about 55 regional and national writers.

The Riverbend Festival fundraising and promotions group hired Derryberry Public Relations who decided a View-Master® style reel, the iconic push-button viewers with round picture discs, would be a unique way to garner more publicity for Chatttanoooga’s nine-day music event.

The red, plastic viewers, complete with the Riverbend logo, were mailed out to more than 50 magazine and newspaper writers including Southern Living, Travel & Leisure, USA Today and The New York Times.

“This has been a fun project,” Mr. Derryberry said. “We are starting to get some feedback, and it has been very positive.”

Chip Baker, president of Friends of the Festival, said the group realized a need to generate more publicity after seeing a USA Today story suggesting City Stages, a three-day music festival about 150 miles south of Chattanooga in in Birmingham, Ala., as an excellent summer activity.

“We do it better than them, and we are bigger than them,” he said. “We are obviously well known in the region, but nationally we are not as well known.”

The image viewers were mailed a few weeks ago and include an informational brochure and a Riverbend admission pin.

Mr. Baker said the cost of the project was less than $10,000, and officials are optimistic that it will turn out to be money well spent.

Both Mr. Baker and Mr. Derryberry said they have not yet received a lot of responses because the products were just recently sent, but the responses they have received have been positive.

“It’s all part of the process of grabbing their attention,” Mr. Baker said. “We will follow up to make sure we bring them to Chattanooga or provide them with information about Riverbend and its importance to the region.”

The Final Reel

Branson View-Master card.A piece of Americana has faded away. Fisher-Price, the toy company that used to market them, has just eliminated almost all the View-Master® travel titles that have been a staple of young lives for almost 70 years.

No longer will you be able to buy a souvenir three-reel set featuring Branson, Las Vegas or New York City. Will there still be Disneyland reels to take home after a day at the park? The boxy binocular-style viewers remain, but the circular reels that brought three-dimensional images of the world to millions have now been cut back to a handful of children’s titles. Long before the Internet, or even before most people had color televisions, View-Master® gave millions a full-color, three-dimensional view of the world.

View-Master Crazy Horse Monument card.View-Master® was introduced at the 1939 New York World’s Fair and became an overnight sensation. During the World War II, the armed forces produced training reels for identifying enemy and friendly aircraft and ships. After the war View-Master® became a household item. Thousands of businesses used custom-made View-Master® reels to promote their products.

Recently the University of Missouri promoted its candidate for the Heisman trophy by giving away viewers molded in the college colors and a reel of highlights from the season. Medical students used View-Master® to study a 3-D atlas of human anatomy in one of the most revered medical photography collections ever produced. More than 1.5 billion reels have been produced, every one of them to the same size and format, and usable in every model of viewer ever made.

Cliff Dwellings MuseumThe gutting of the View-Master® comes just as 3-D is experiencing a comeback. Improved technology has made 3-D films much easier to produce and view, allowing them to progress far beyond the gimmicky thrusting of objects into the audience seen in films briefly in vogue in the early 1950s. The Jonas Brothers, the popular boy band for teenage girls, recently released a concert film in 3-D and also appeared on a 3-D magazine cover. Several 3-D commercials aired during the Super Bowl, the climax of the football season. George Lucas is said to be toying with the idea of re-releasing the Star Wars saga in a retrofitted 3-D format. Recent blockbusters, including Beowulf have appeared in 3-D versions at special cinemas, with many more to come. Sadly, the experience of 3-D travel in your hand, which the View-Master® made possible, is now a thing of the past.

Another 3-D Journey is in the Works

Journey 3-D poster art.New Line Cinema is mounting a second 3-D Journey to the Center of the Earth.

The first movie, made for about $60 million, was one of the first 3-D films to receive a wide release and grossed $240 million worldwide. Despite that, the studio waited to see the DVD numbers, which turned out to be robust, before committing to the sequel.

Eric Brevig is back as director and this time will be involved in the development of the script.

One challenge to mounting a second film was finding a story to tell; the source material for the first film, the book by Jules Verne, did not have a sequel. One concept considered was to set the story in Atlantis, but with several Atlantis projects in development at other studios and underwater photography costly, that idea was nixed.

The sequel's story line came together in the form of a speculation script by Richard Outten, a writer whose last credited work was 1993-94 Fox TV series The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. Titled Mysterious Travels, the adventure tale was based on the fantasy conceit that the literary tales Gulliver's Travels, Treasure Island and Verne's own Mysterious Island all occurred on the same island.

Having bought the script, the producers are repurposing it to fit the Journey characters, who were played by Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson. The actors are expected to reprise their roles.

The City Quakes: The San Francisco Earthquakes of 1906 and 1989 by Robert Bloomberg

The Hollywood Reporter Presents 3-D Film Screenings at FILMART in Hong Kong

The Hollywood Reporter hosted an unprecedented one and a half days of 3-D screenings in Hong Kong during FILMART and the 33rd Hong Kong International Film Festival on March 25 and 26. In addition, The Hollywood Reporter moderated an in-depth two hour panel on 3-D with leading industry executives as part of the Hong Kong-Asian Film Financing Forum at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

At HAF, the program included an industry address by Michael Ellis, President of MPA, Asia Pacific and presentations including Selling 2-D and 3-D presented by Don Savant, Managing Director of IMAX, Asia Pacific, The 3-D Deployment by Younghoon Lee, CEO MasterImage and a Nielsen White Paper on the topic of 3-D presented by Eric Mika, The Hollywood Reporter Publisher and Vice President of the Nielsen Entertainment and Media Group. The program culminated in a round table discussion that will be open to the public.

The 33rd Hong Kong International Film Festival premiered Dreamworks' Monsters vs. Aliens with special guest Jeffrey Katzenberg on March 24 and The Hollywood Reporter's 3-D screening series featured Disney's Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience and Focus Features' Coraline, among many other exciting 3-D films on March 25.

"Asia is the fastest growing film market in the world, however it lags behind Europe and the United States in its 3-D development," said Mika. "As 3-D is playing an ever important part in the film industry, The Hollywood Reporter is taking a leading role in bringing the 3-D experience to the Asian public by providing an independent and professional platform in the heart of Hong Kong during FILMART and the 33rd Hong Kong International Film Festival. We predict that the embracing of 3-D technology will have tremendous effects on the Asian Film industry for years to come and we are delighted to be at its center."

3-D Screenings Asia is hosted by The Hollywood Reporter and created in collaboration with Grand Cinemas and MasterImage. All screenings, were open to the public, presented in 3-D by MasterImage and held at the Grand Cinemas, Kowloon - the most technologically advanced theaters in Hong Kong with over 1,700 seats.

The Child's Eye in 3-D

The first Asian digital 3-D horror film is coming to theaters from Universe Films and the directing twins Danny and Oxide Pang.

The $4.5 million The Child’s Eye in 3-D will begin shooting in June in Thailand. Their first scare-fest, 2002’s The Eye, is the source material for the 2008 Jessica Alba film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Child’s Eye in 3-D will mark the first Asian film to be offered in the 3-D format.

Danny told The Hollywood Reporter that both he and his brother have been big fans of the new trends in filming styles, saying, “We always enjoy new visual styles, so we went to see the 3-D Hollywood films the first chance we got. The technology of 3-D filming is now well-developed enough for us to try applying our horror style.” The Pangs are giving fans a horror monster this time around.

The Child’s Eye in 3-D tells the story of six stranded Hong Kong travelers during the shutdown of the Bangkok airport in the November 2008 anti-government protest and their supernatural encounters after the disappearance of three in the group.

Toy Story Mania Game to include 3-D Glasses

Toy Story Mania logo.Disney Interactive Studios is dipping into its vault and is developing a new Wii title based on the beloved Pixar movie franchise Toy Story. The gameplay of Toy Story Mania! will actually be based off of the rides and attractions found at Disneyland Resorts.

What is especially interesting about this announcement is that Disney will be packing a pair of 3-D glasses with each copy of the game, to create what it calls "eye-popping visuals." In terms of what the actual game will consist of, it looks like it will be a series of different shooting galleries, in addition to a few other minigames. It will include multiplayer support for up to four players, as well as both competitive and co-op modes.

There is no shortage of minigame collections on the Wii, but the combination of a strong license and the novelty of 3-D glasses could make Toy Story Mania! an interesting game to watch. As of now it has been given the vague release window of fall.

The 7th annual 3-D stereoscopic weekend will be at the Lodge Sawmill Creek Resort and Conderence Center at 400 Sawmill Creek Dr. W in Huron, Ohio. The event is sponsored by the National Stereoscopic Association and the Ohio Stereo Photographic Society.

AMC Theatres Go 1/3rd 3-D

AMC Entertainment Inc. has announced a deal with RealD to convert about a third of its more than 4,500 American screens for digital 3-D presentations.

The rollout already has begun, according to AMC representative Justin Scott, who said that currently the company has 146 RealD screens. By the time the job is completed in 2010, about 1,500 of the chain’s auditoriums will be equipped for digital 3-D.

"Our intent is to feature at least one 3-D screen in every AMC theatre," said Gerry Lopez, AMC’s CEO and president. "This partnership with RealD will give our guests an enhanced way to experience movies perfectly timed for the full line-up of 3-D films coming from some of the biggest names in Hollywood."

Other chains are getting into the 3-D business as well. The regional chain Dickinson Theatres, which operates theaters in 11 states, announced last fall it would convert most of its theatres to digital projection, with one or two auditoriums in each megaplex capable of showing 3-D films.

The Forever War in 3-D

Blade Runner director Ridley Scott reportedly saw footage of James Cameron's Avatar in 3-D and was inspired to film The Forever War in 3-D. The film will be based on an anti-war piece about an endless intergalactic war and the bureaucracy that comes with such a conflict.

A Cheney's Saloon stereoview sold for $338 with 18 bids. This is circa 1860's card with a view of Cheney's Chicago Saloon and Billiard Hall #1. This saloon was built in Golden, Colorado in 1859.
