De-3-D Glasses? (Them's fightin' words)

De-3D glasses.

If your friends love 3-D movies but it gives you headaches then ThinkGeek has the solution to deliver 2-D images to your tired eyes with the De-3-D Cinema Glasses. The De-3-D glasses eliminate the 3-D effect from 3-D movies allowing you to watch the film in 2-D. The De-3-D glasses are designed to eliminate the left eye image and show only the right eye image to both eyes. Of course, you could always save the $14.99 cost of the glasses and just go to the 2-D projected version.

T-Mobile launches the first 3-D 4G Android 3.0 tablet

If you live in the U.S., the day is almost here on which you can get a 3-D 4G Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet. T-Mobile is finally launching their G-Slate, a co-branded tablet with LG Electronics, in their stores for buyers looking for a different kind of tablet experience.

On the 8.9-inch G-Slate there are two rear-facing cameras for recording 3-D content and the HD (1280×768) display is a 3-D display. The G-Slate will be the first 3-D tablet brought to market here in the U.S.

Being first doesn’t mean the 3-D performance is perfect. CNET mentions in their review for the G-Slate, “good-looking 3-D is not what you get with the G-Slate”, the main critique is the red-and-blue anaglyphic 3-D glasses required for the G-Slate. It was thought the G-Slate would use stereoscopic 3-D tech.

T-Mobile plans to charge $529.99 for the G-Slate, but that price is after you sign a two year service agreement on their 4G network and apply a $100 mail-in rebate.

However if you want no strings attached just the G-Slate will cost you $749.99.

Some other features included for that price with the G-Slate include the following; 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core, 32 GB of internal memory, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 4G mobile broadband, a front facing 2MP camera, full-sized HDMI output port with Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) support, micro-USB port, micro-SDHC card slot (up to 32GB) and a 6400 mAh Li-Ion battery.

The two-year license agreement allows Intel to supply DDD’s TriDef 3-D Experience software with Intel’s 3-D PC processors directly to original equipment manufacturers and also in retail 3-D accessory packs. DDD will receive quarterly royalties from Intel based on the volume of OEM and retail software products shipped. Foo Fighters in 3-D

The Foo Fighters are hitting the cinemas for a limited time only with Foo Fighters – Back and Forth, a documentary about the band’s history, followed by a 3-D filmed performance by the band playing their new album, Wasting Light.

Foo Fighters – Back And Forth chronicles the 16-year history of the Foo Fighters, from the band’s very first songs created as cassette demos Dave Grohl recorded during his tenure as Nirvana’s drummer, through its ascent to their Grammy-winning, multi-platinum, arena and stadium head-lining status as one of the biggest rock bands on the planet.

The session will be split into two segments, the documentary in 2-D and then the concert in 3-D.

The Civil War in 3-D, There's an App for That

Anaglyph of the stereo view of the Old Stone Church in Centreville, VA.

A new iPad app available that offers an exciting and immersive experience for enthusiasts of history and 3-D images, but it also provides a gift to the nation.

Launched to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the start of The Civil War on April 12, History 3-D: Civil War is the first in a series of iPad apps that will offer scores of photos in 3-D anaglyph format (red/cyan) for viewers to explore. It is expected hundreds of anaglyphs will be created during the development of successive apps.

The photographs come exclusively from the collections of the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, which holds tens of thousands of stereographic images. Most of the images are derived from the original glass-plate negatives of photography legends such as Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner, Timothy O’Sullivan and George N. Barnard.

While the newly created anaglyphs, which combine the original left and right halves of stereographs, could conceivably be copyrighted, they instead will be donated to the Library of Congress, free of charge, for release into the public domain and eventual display online. The Library is planning to display selected images on its website and its popular Flickr page.

History 3-D was conceived by Matt Raymond, who until recently was communications director at the Library of Congress and is credited with helping spearhead the Library's leading role in social media among government agencies and cultural institutions. It was developed along with Mike Silvers of, an iPhone and iPad development company in Salisbury, Md.

“Many of the iconic Civil War images in the Library of Congress have been familiar to me and millions of other people in 2-D, but the added dimension of History 3-D makes it feel like you’re seeing them for the first time,” Raymond said. “Your iPad is now your time machine.”

History 3-D: Civil War was available in the App Store for 99 cents through April 16 (the week of the aforementioned anniversary of the start of the Civil War), after which time the price will be $1.99.

Two dozen iconic images are presented in a page-turner format, along with pop-up context and commentary, are included. Additional sets of images focusing on key Civil War battles and topics, and other major historical events, will also be released.

History 3-D will also take part in the App Store’s Volume Purchase Program, which offers discounts to educational institutions.

“During my time at the Library of Congress, I saw the power of primary-source materials in getting young people more excited about and engaged with history in ways that text books couldn’t match,” Raymond said.

“I hope History 3-D’s innovative presentation of these remarkable photographs will spark curiosity about our nation’s past, and help us see that ‘history’ and ‘fun’ don’t have to be mutually exclusive.”

Toshiba's Glasses Free Notebook

The Dynabook Qosmio T851/D8CR from Toshiba is the first laptop that allows for glasses-free 3-D viewing. The Quosmio T851/D8CR creates the three-dimensional illusion by a method known as the "parallax technique". What this involves is sending a different image to each eye in order to essentially fool the brain into thinking that there's depth where none exists.

One problem with this technique is it's highly reliant on the angle which it's viewed. Toshiba's attempt to eliminate this handicap is an onboard webcam with two functions known as "face tracking" and "active lens" to track the position of the user's eyes and face, and adjust the angle of the 3-D image accordingly. The laptop also features real time conversion of 2-D to 3-D via Toshiba's proprietary Spursengine image processor.

The Dynabook Quosmio like Toshiba's new Regza tablet has a Japanese release date for late July but the international release remains a mystery. Toshiba's suggested price is $2,790 for the Japanese release.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 to get 3-D Blu-Ray Treatment

Producers of the franchise Harry Potter franchise are planning on releasing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 in 3-D for a Blu-ray release. Producer David Heyman said, “We’re doing 3-D for the DVD of ’7, Part 1.'"

In March 2010, Heyman said “I’m sure it’s just a matter of time” regarding the 3-D conversion of the entire series. The filmmakers are racing to finish Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 before the July release and working on the conversion of the first part for the Blu-ray.

“We’re very pleased with the way ‘Part 1' is going, the 3-D for the Blu-ray,” producer David Barron said. “I was surprised at how wonderful it is. It is different in some ways than the theatrical release, but it’s enriching,” said Heyman. “It’s much easier to do 3-D for a smaller screen than it is for a bigger screen.”

Here is a look at the official trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. Note the tagline at the end of the trailer, "Complete the journey in 3-D."

8th Annual Stereo Club of Southern California 3-D Movie Festival

The Stereo Club of Southern California announced the dates for the 8th Annual Los Angeles 3-D Movie Festival, to be held on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15, 2011, at the Downtown Independent Theatre. The festival will showcase a selection of more than 25 international 3-D shorts in competition.

"Hollywood studios aren't the only ones producing 3-D movies. The LA 3-D Movie Festival showcases independent 3-D movies made by filmmakers from all over the world. These creative 3-D filmmakers have developed their own solutions to produce stereoscopic motion pictures that frequently are more innovative than the work of the big studios," said 3-D film historian Ray Zone.

Other festival highlights include the premiere screening of a 3-D feature film, stereoscopic art installations, demonstrations of do-it-yourself 3-D production, and a special presentation by Chuck Comisky, the 3-D VFX supervisor for Avatar. All events will be held at the Downtown Independent Theatre at 251 S. Main St. in Los Angeles, California. For the complete schedule and online ticket sales, visit the festival website.
