NSA convention postcard art.

"Orange" you going to attend the National Stereoscopic Assocation annual convention starting on July 25 in Costa Mesa, California? This year’s Keynote Speaker is Lenny Lipton, who is recognized as the father of the electronic stereoscopic display industry. He was the lead inventor of the current state-of-the-art technologies that enable today's theatrical filmmakers to project their feature films in 3-D and his work is also the basis for much of today’s 3-D TV technology. He has 53 patents granted with many others pending.

The other celebrity speaker at this year’s convention is Dr. Brian May who will present his Brief History of 3-D. Dr. May is a legendary guitarist, songwriter, singer, founding member of Queen, astrophysicist and author. He has had a lifelong interest in Victorian 3-D photography. In 2009 he published his third book A Village Lost and Found, he is currently working on his next book DIABLERIES – Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell (working title) expected out next year. A 2005 Planet Rock poll voted May the seventh greatest guitarist of all time. For his work in 3-D see the website: www.londonstereo.com.

3-D movies have existed since the dawning days of cinema
In recent years, millions of moviegoers have come to appreciate the visual excitement achieved with the addition of a third dimension. Many of today’s highest grossing films are in 3-D, TV boasts ever-increasing 3-D content and its future promise seems limitless.

3-D, however, is far from being a 21st Century phenomenon. 3-D photography dates back to the 1830’s with Stereopticon Cards and viewers providing the masses with an opportunity to visually visit and learn about beautiful, historic and exotic people and places all over the world.

Those who remember the 1950’s will recall the thrill of spears, pies, yoyos and various other objects and appendages hurtling toward them from the 3-D screen.
Then, 38 years ago, a group of people from all walks of life who loved
the 3-D experience, met to share 3-D images (mass produced and homemade), memorabilia, technical expertise and equipment… and to discuss and plan for the future.

That enthusiastic band which became the National Stereoscopic Association now has grown to 2,500 members from all over the world and remains at the forefront of all that is 3-D.

Using a View-Master® Viewer for Therapy

View-Master art.Over all the years she has worked with children on the autism spectrum, Kathie Harrington has found a View-Master® is one of those treasures she always carries to use for therapy.

She keeps it simple when using a View-Master® with children on or off the autism spectrum using a light weight and easy to handle viewer. No scenics though...images are best when they feature the latest cartoon characters, favorites, new movies or animals.

Harrington says there are several ways to interact with the children while they use the viewer.

  • Turn taking and sharing (between two or more people).
  • Focus/attention.
  • Vocabulary.
  • Sequencing.
  • Visual awareness.
  • Expressive speechInitiating.
  • Answering (whatever level the child is at: yes/no or wh questions).
  • Finding humor.
  • Social skills (talking about the scenes).

Kathie Harrington is a graduate of Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.
