Jefferson Stereoptics Next View-Master Auction is Sept. 5

View-Master 3M viewerOne of the best places to find View-Master® and other 3-D items for sale is Jefferson Stereoptics regularly held View-Master® and stereoview auctions conducted by John Saddy. The latest collection of View-Master® goodies goes on the auction block on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, featuring lots 1 through 331.

Subscribers receive John's catalog several times a year. Cost of the subscription pays for printing the catalog and postage to mail it. Each issue of the printed catalog includes photos of some of the most sought after 3-D items featured in each sale.

Included in this sale are some of the best of the files from the Willie Aarts Collection. Most of the files had just the usual paperwork, (sometimes they used photocopies in the files) but others have authentic art department hand renderings, suggested packet series styles, story-line mockups and more. Unless otherwise described, these files are without reels. Some of the mockups are a touch rough with the odd rip or tear, but these were treated simply as part of the process of producing View-Master® and no special care was given to them. There were hundreds of files in the Aarts Collection, but only a matter of dozens are what John calls the best. The basic paperwork includes the titles, usually in several languages. Letters and correspondence are usually in French or Dutch language, but sometimes in English.

Some of the items in the September auctions:

  • Lot 24 - Moussa Maamari Castle Belgium File. With extremely ultra-rare Kodachrome test reels with a total of 22 images. FILE FOR MOUSSA MAAMARI CASTLE (Beit Ed-dine, Lebanon) comes with 22 images, 21 on C7001, 2, 3 and 1 image on C7004. Images seem to depict a Christian theme tourist place. The lot also includes the usual paperwork, but mostly in English and a bit interesting, with one letter expressing disappointment that something wasn’t included in a letter from the other party. There is also a pasted-over (Egypt) pkt-book with Arabic text inside pasted-in, which John assumes is for this set, as the front of the mock-up has a title label for this set pasted on. From a packet produced in the 1970s or 1980s.
  • Lot 30 - The Perishers Belgium File (BD184) Cartoon. Includes the usual paperwork, including letter in English promising three sets of artwork representing three stories. Each piece of artwork contained in an area approximately 15cm X 18cm. There are, as promised, three sets of seven black-and-white hand-rendered drawings on very thick, almost a thin drywall, card. John believes the stereo color images were made from these original pieces of art.
  • Lot 38 - Disney's Pluto Belgium File (B529) Includes the usual paperwork. Highlights are: A) hand-rendered color images of Pluto: (One 6" x 7"), (Six times very approx. 7" wide x 3" tall) and (one 7" wide x 4 ½" tall). Absolutely beautiful and frame-worthy original Disneyana art at auction!
  • Lot 39 - Packet Proposals. Extremely rare item that John thinks only a few of these exist and these are one-of-a-kind items. French language. These are rough outlines that would have been presented as proposals for packet sets. These are hand-rendered on a sort of firm blotting paper, 9" x 12". Part A: Page one of a two page presentation, covers images 1 to 15, the theme is two children travel through time from the prehistoric period, Roman, Charlemagne, Mediaeval, Commune and scenes 14 and 15 represent WWI and WWII. Part B; hand-rendered but includes a large photograph. ‘CASSE-COU’ looks like an action theme. This covers the entire 21 scenes.
  • Lot 40 - Packet Proposals. Billy the Kid and Davy Crocketts Extremely rare item that John thinks only a few of these exist and these are one-of-a-kind items. Pages are a bit ruffled but in overall very good condition.
  • Lot 58 - Tide Laundry Detergent Set (circa 1995) Comes with Model L blue with orange flat advance and with two Tide stickers. Plus a Tide reel, with either simulated or real 3-D, but no plain flat images. Also three mono 35mm slides and information about the history of Tide. Reel is non-Kodachrome but color is excellent. The viewer and contents of box are excellent. The box has a few minor scrapes but is in good shape.
  • Lot 63 - Matchbox View-Master® Van with reel (Limited Edition) The van is excellent and only 500 of this special toy were made out of a limited edition run of 1,000 single reels. The reel in non-Kodachrome with color images of various collectible Matchbox cars.
  • Lot 80 - View-Master® Flying Disc similiar to a Frisbee® with View-Master® graphics.
  • Lot 199 - Micellaneous Group including a Barbie Convention Reel, rare advertising, a 5-year Sawyer's Employee Pin and Meopta Pin. The lot consists of two small folder/ads that John had never seen before, 1 Meopta pin that looks from the 1950s, 1 Kodachrome Personal reel of a Barbie Doll convention, a tiny 5-year service Sawyer pin, and a tie clip, lapel pin, or single cuff-link depicting a single reel in sleeve. This last item may be modern, but John thinks it may also be from the 50s, but it is very hard to tell!
  • Lot 257 -The Chinese Art Set complete with viewer, stand, books, reels, etc. The material inside the case has deteriorated to a mush. But otherwise all is fine. The items are protected by plastic from the mush.

The auction items are also listed and all lots are scanned on John's Web site at The Web site is easily navigated by topic. Each item is grouped in areas of interest such as View-Master® packets USA and Canada or View-Master® packets television and movies and so on. You will need to register on the site in order to place a bid online.

John grades each item and includes elaborate descriptions, too. Unlike eBay, sniping is not part of the equation in John's auctions. Lots are closed with a very liberal waiting period. Beginning at the closing time, after 10 minutes with no bids or inquiries, all lots are closed together.

You can contact John via an e-mail link on the Saddy Auctions Web site to find out about subscribing to the catalog. Jefferson Stereoptics is located in London Ontario, Canada.

Cinemate View-Master® Viewer and Bubble Gum Machine Flea Market Find

Cinemate viewer.

Inside the Cinemate viewer. This one is just a little bit rusty.

Cinemate viewer with gum graphic.

Recently a Cinemate View-Master® viewer and bubble gum machine showed up in a flea market in Belgium. The buyer, Noel, paid $30 (U.S.) for the non-working machine. Noel sent an email to 3-D Review Online Magazine editor Van Beydler asking for information about the machine since he knew nothing about it. Noel didn't realize it was a bubble gum machine at all.

Noel originally put a View-Master® graphic in the window thinking it was only a viewer (see photo). He now has changed the picture in the front window to look like it is loaded with gumballs (see photo). He thought the tube inside was a repay for wrong coins instead of the transport for bubble gum.

Noel did some repair work by inserting a 4.5 volt battery and two new bulbs and returned to the flea market to buy four reels to use in the machine. It now has a Flintstones reel in the viewer. Noel related what he called a hilarious story when he called in his oldest son in to see a 3-D image in the viewer but the boy went to the flatscreen, thinking dad meant 3-D TV instead of the viewing machine.

Noel said, "The Cinemate viewer is now the highlight of my casa!"

Sony HMZ-T2 Personal 3-D Viewer

The Sony HMZ-T2 has a pair of high-contrast 1280×720 OLED screens for displaying separate content to each eye. This produces a crosstalk-free 3-D image, and a simulated screen that’s like sitting in a small movie theatre.

The updated HMZ-T2 personal viewer lets you listen to movies with headphones of your choice or a surround sound system because the earbuds are now removable. Aa “harmonics equalizer” is said to improve sound quality no matter what device you listen with.

The T1 weighed quite a bit and put significant pressure on the forehead and bridge of the nose but the new version has a larger forehead pad, weighs a little less (330g vs. 500g), and comes with more adjustments for its headstrap.

Sony also added a 24p “true cinema” mode for 24 frame-per-second cinematic playback.

There is no release date or manufacturer's suggested retail price for the HMZ-T2 from Sony as of yet.

Samsung ES9500 3-D TV

Samsung 3-D TV

A 55-inch ES9500 OLED TV is being touted by Samsung at the IFA tradeshow. The ES9500 is promoted to produce the ultimate picture quality with crosstalk-free 3-D visuals and 20 percent richer colors compared with current LED-lit TVs. OLED TVs are capable of rendering nice, dark, inky blacks since they do not require backlighting just like a plasma set.

The ES9500 also sports sleek and minimalistic styling with an ultraslim bezel including an embedded camera. Two users can watch different content using a new multi-view option complete with sound through special 3-D glasses with built-in earphones.

Samsung has a 75-inch LED TV under its ES9000 series, too. The mammoth unit comes with a 9mm-thin bezel in rose-gold hue. The panel also shares many advanced features with the ES9500. Pricing and a release date for the TV is yet to be announced.

Flying Swords of Dragon's Gate, China's First IMAX 3-D Production, comes to America for one week starting Aug. 31

Flying Swords of Dragons Gate 3D poster art.

Flying Swords of Dragon Gate was released in China last December as that country's first IMAX 3-D production. The film is now being showcased in 15 IMAX cinemas across North America. The film will screen for one week only starting Aug. 31, 2012.

The film is an updated version of director King Hu's 1966 classic Dragon Gate Inn and a 1992 remake New Dragon Gate Inn. The film has an abundance of all-digital characters that sport martial-arts superpowers mixed with live action wirework stunts.

Jet Li portrays a Ming Dynasty freedom fighter named Zhou who rescues alleged traitors being held for execution. The action winds up at the desert home of the Dragon Gate Inn built over a legendary city of treasure, which is only revealed by a sandstorm once every 60 years. The spectacular IMAX 3-D format makes this clash of titans a martial arts romp.
