Stereoscopic Displays and Applications Conference Accepting Abstracts through Sept. 14

SD&A logoThere is still time to submit your abstract to Stereoscopic Displays and Applications (SD&A) for 2016.

"Just like a new pair of shoes we are still wearing in the new abstract submission system," said Andrew Woods. "To make things less confusing we have aligned all the final abstract due dates to Sept. 14, 2015 so there is still time to submit your abstract to SD&A 2016."

At this time there are three presentation modes to consider when submitting your abstract:

  1. The traditional oral presentation and published manuscript
  2. The traditional poster presentation and published manuscript
  3. The new method - oral presentation only (with no manuscript) - this final mode is primarily intended for commercial authors. SD&A strongly encourages authors to consider submitting a full manuscript as this provides more exposure for their work - but the choice is yours.

Visit the SD&A 2016 website for more details. .

Kraftwerk 3-D at The Tate Modern

German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk have played eight live performances in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in their first London dates since 2004.

Kraftwerk - The Catalogue 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 is a chronological exploration of the group’s sonic and visual experiments and presents eight classic master works from across their celebrated repertoire with spectacular 3-D visualisations and effects.

Combining sound and images, the performances showcase nearly 40 years of musical and technical innovation, including new improvisations, 3-D projections and animation. Commencing with Autobahn, each night covers one of Kraftwerk’s groundbreaking studio albums in full and appear in order of their release - Autobahn (1974), Radio-Activity (1975), Trans Europe Express (1977), The Man-Machine (1978), Computer World (1981), Techno Pop (1986), The Mix (1991) and Tour de France (2003) - alongside additional compositions from their back-catalogue.

Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider began the Kraftwerk project in 1970 at their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf, Germany. Within a few years they had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electro “sound paintings” and musical experimentation with tapes and synthesizers. With their visions of the future they created the soundtrack for the digital age. Their compositions, using innovative looping techniques and computerised rhythms, have had a major international influence across a range of music genres. Their use of robotics and other technical innovations in live performance illustrates Kraftwerk’s belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine in creating art.

The performances have been curated by Klaus Biesenbach, Chief Curator at Large, The Museum of Modern Art, Art, Marion Ackermann, Artistic Director, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen and Catherine Wood, Curator (Contemporary Art & Performance), Tate Modern.

Animal Adventures 3-D Hardback Book

Animal Adventures 3-D cover art

A new anaglyphic 3-D book titled Animal Adventures 3-D from the TIME for Kids series is available for pre-order on Amazon. Photographer David Klutho and Ron Labbe worked together on this book to bring some amazing images to print. A good number of the anaglyphs are available to preview using Amazon's "Look Inside" feature. The photo of the snake on page 9 is one of our favorites. The snake literally comes off the page and breaks the stereo window to stick it's head out at you.

Featuring 100 large-scale, action photos of wild animals in their natural habitats, Animals Adventures 3-D is a one-of-a-kind reading experience. TIME for Kids and master 3-D photographer David Klutho present incredible photos, taken only with a 3-D camera, along with fascinating facts about Komodo dragons, polar bears, camels, anteaters and more amazing animals. Accompanied by two sets of 3-D glasses, this dynamic visual collection of some of the planet's diverse animal life will entertain and educate any animal fan.

The suggested retail price is $19.95 but a pre-order price was listed at $15.45. This is the third book in the TIME for Kids series with the previously released two books titled Zoo 3-D and Dinosaurs 3-D. All of the books come with two pairs of anaglyphic 3-D glasses.

A Civil War era stereoview showing dead confederate soldiers sold for $787 with six bids. The vintage Civil War albumen stereoview is view #571 by Alexander Gardner, and was published in Brady's Album Gallery. A single image of this scene is reproduced on page 250 in William Frassanito's book Antietam, The Photographic Legacy of America's Bloodiest Day. The caption is on page 249 and reads as follows: "Confederate dead, near the Sherrick farm, Gardner, stereo # 571, Sept. 21,1862." Frassanito's detailed analysis of this rare view is most interesting.
