3ality to Shut Down and Sell Off Equipment

3ality logo

Steve Schklair, 3ality's CEO. has announced that 3ality will be no more. "After 15 years of serious development and shooting movies, concerts, and live sports all over the world its time to wrap it up and call it a day," Schklair posted online. "I am proud of the technologies we developed that enabled us to shoot live and to shoot feature films on a 2-D schedule, delivering perfectly aligned images in real time. But as you all know, 3-D television broadcasts are long gone, and with very few exceptions studios have turned to conversion for their 3-D releases. There is just not enough business to support the overhead of a live action company like 3ality, even at its most pared down state."

"So I am selling everything. Some of the things you may be interested in are the rigs, the image processors, or even the best 50/50 beam splitters ever made. They are made from Schott water white glass, polished to an impossible spec, and then have around 25 layers of metallic coatings applied by JDSU. These are more than mirrors, they are optical instruments."

"3ality also has quite a few of the Element Technica rigs available from our acquisition of that company, and will sell these for less than pennies on the dollar. If you are in LA, am also going to have a sale day where you can pour through shelf after shelf of parts and components, from electronics to metal to mirror boxes."

You can visit Schklair's Facebook page to instant message Schklair if you are interested. He has to be out of the warehouse at the end of the month so its soon or never.

"Over the years I have also had to purchase gear from 3ality personally as no one else was doing so and overhead marches on," Schklair concluded, "so will still maintain a small capability of shooting films and other projects after 3ality closes. In some manner, still keeping the dream alive."

Schklair has been working at the forefront of new technologies for most of his career. Schklair is dedicated to advancing and developing S3D in the motion picture and the real-time broadcast of S3D programming especially live concerts and sports events.

Schklair's vision to attain the most perfect and easy to capture S3D images remains true to the technology's potential—changing how audiences experience movies, episodic television, and sports programming. As a result, the company has been noted for leading the S3D movement, shooting the first live S3D broadcasts from the NFL, the BCS Championship, a variety of programming for BSkyB, the Super Bowl, and the World Cup. With Schklair at the helm, 3ality systems and technology have gone global and are being utilized in countries such as Japan, Korea, Australia, the UK, Russia, India, and in Latin America. Productions utilizing 3ality's systems and technology include The Hobbit (all three installments), The Amazing Spider-Man, Prometheus, The Great Gatsby, and Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Recognized as an international S3D expert, Schklair contributed to the 2011 book, 3-D TV and 3-D Cinema, written by Bernard Mendiburu with Yves Pupulin. Schklair has presented the key-note at 3-D Masters in London, at Dimension-3 in Paris, IBC in Amsterdam, and he provided the key-note at the University of China's opening of their 3-D school. Schklair is intensely in tune with what is happening in the S3D world as it relates directly to advancements in S3D technology and its applications in a variety of platforms.

In 2014, the International 3-D and Advanced Imaging Society recognized Schklair and 3ality with the prestigious Century Award, which is presented to those individuals and companies who have indelibly left their mark on 3-D's first century.

Summer of MeTV Uses View-Master® Themed Commercial

MeTV is using a View-Master® themed commercial to promote its summer television lineup the network is calling "The Summer of MeTV". An animated reel spins out of the "MeTV Viewer" to show many of the popular TV shows from the past. Too bad MeTV doesn't produce an actual souvenir reel. Sadly, only M*A*S*H* was among these shows to have actual View-Master® reels.

Quadrascopic Cameras: The Failed Third Wave of Photography by Hudson Brown

Nishika pinback button.

It’s a story that involves more than just an odd-looking camera. During its short rise and subsequent fall, there was a host of misguided tech, bankruptcies and federal investigations – all in the name of uncovering ‘the next Polaroid’. The camera’s premise hinged on a four-lens design that captured four simultaneous images from slightly different perspectives, which would then be used to create 18 oscillating 3-D prints from a 36-exposure roll of film.
