Kickstarter Campaign: Help Restore the 1977 Martial-Arts Classic Dynasty in 3-D

Dynasty poster art.

Since October 2015, the 3-D Film Archive has successfully restored 20 vintage features for preservation and Blu-ray release. Generous backers have supported two previous Kickstarter campaigns presented with 3-D SPACE: September Storm and El Corazón y la Espada. The 3-D Film Archive is asking for your help to restore the 1977 martial arts 3-D classic Dynasty aka Qian dao wan li zhu aka Super Dragon.

This 3-D pop-out spectacular is directed by Mei-Chun Chang and stars Tao-Liang Tan, Ying Bai, Kang Chin and David Wei Tang. Ying Bai was given an award for Best Supporting Actor at the 1977 Golden Horse Film Festival, The original screenplay is by Kuo-Hsiung Liu and the stereo cinematography is by Jung-Shu Chen.

The goal for this restoration is to raise $10,000. These funds will enable The 3-D Film Archive to do 4K digital scans of the surviving 35mm materials. Once scanned, The 3-D Film Archive will doe a meticulous frame by frame digital clean-up of all dirt and damage, left/right shot-by-shot stereoscopic vertical alignment correction, flicker reduction, scene to scene color restoration, image stabilization and grading to assemble a fully restored digital 3-D master.

This new digital master will then be used for a Region 1 (A) 3-D Blu-ray release. This disc will not be a BD-R, it will be a commercial disc pressed and manufactured to current industry standards.

The distributor for this release will be announced before the end of the campaign on July 31. The goal is to have this release in Kickstarter supporters and the public's hands no later than December 2020.

This will be The 3-D Film Archive's first release in Compatible 3-D meaning you can view it on any system. The package will have both BD3D polarized and anaglyphic (red/cyan) 3-D versions. In other words, a dedicated 3-D Blu-ray player/display will not be required to view Dynasty in 3-D. The packaging will contain one pair of anaglyphic 3-D glasses with information on how to acquire additional glasses.

The film will also be playable in standard flat 2-D mode.

The audio channel will have the English dub track only, in the miracle of 4-channel magnetic Quadrophonic sound.

The campaign is very basic this time with only one reward level for a Compatible 3-D Blu-ray. However, you are more than welcome to pledge higher than $35 if you want to help reach the $10,0000 goal - and unlock some VERY exciting stretch goals - even sooner.

To make a pledge to help save and restore this exciting 3-D Martial Arts classic visit the Dynasty 3-D Kickstarter campaign webpage.

Editors Note: The Dynasta 3-D Kickstarter campaign met its goal in just 3 days. Bob Furmanek added some special incentives during the rest of the campaign. The first incentive is the restoration of the 1950s 3-D Comic The House of Terror. Featuring incredible multi-level, three-dimensional art by legendary artists Joe Kubert and Matt Baker, the creepy stories include "Picture of Evil," "The Violin of Death," "The Curse of Khar," and "The Devil's Chair." The restoration will not be an actual physical copy of the comic book. It will be included as a bonus image supplement on the 3-D Blu-ray.

Pyramids of Gizeh book sample.

Philip Brown, also known as 3D Phil, released an electronic Kindle book titled Egypt Glass Plate 3D Vol 1: 50 Digitally Restored Glass Plate 3D Stereoscopic images In the Stereoview Side by Side Card Format in Stunning Grade 1 Quality in January 2019. The online book features 50 original side by side stereoview cards painstakingly restored images of 1800s Egyptian scenes..

Each page is dedicated to each 3-D image and is complete with original description. The images are presented in high resolution 300 dpi for maximum quality. Brown decided to clean up these old photographs by hand using very high resolution scans and removing every sratch, dust and watermark, then he aligned the images and created a comfortable stereo window for perfect and comfortable viewing. "Some archivists don't like to do any restoration of old photographs from the 1800s," said Brown, "but in the case of stereoscopic 3-D photography, we have no choice but to fix all the problems described above in order that I can bring these incredible images from our past back to life in order that a modern day audience can view these wonderful 3-D images the way the original stereographer would of seen them when he photographed them."

If you purchase the E-book you can have a free PDF version for viewing on your PC or Mac by contacting the author with proof of purchase to 3dphilbrown@gmail.com you will then be sent a download link.
